02 // Who We Are

A Legacy of Courage and Commitment

What is SEYP? Anti-Trafficking NGO in Benin City, Nigeria

The Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP) is a Nigerian non-governmental organization founded in 2004 in Benin City, Edo State. SEYP works to prevent human trafficking and irregular migration by providing emergency shelter, psychosocial care, vocational training, and entrepreneurship programs to vulnerable youth, trafficking survivors, and persons with disabilities in Nigeria. Edo State is Nigeria’s primary source state for outbound human trafficking. Vulnerable young lives leave through the Sahara and the Mediterranean, chasing empty promises that too often end in abuse or death.

"We committed ourselves not to the comfort of distant advocacy, but to the hard, unglamorous, transformative work of sitting with survivors and building livelihoods before the traffickers did."
SEYP Founding Mission Statement, 2004

In 2021, our founding Executive Director, Mrs. Jennifer Ero, led the establishment of an Adire textile and indigo dye production center in Auchi. Though she passed away suddenly before its launch, her daughter, Victoria Omo-Ero, stepped in as Executive Director, initiating SEYP's most prolific period of growth, collaborating with global agencies like GIZ, IOM, and the EU.

03 // The Challenge

The Cycle of Outbound Trafficking

Human Trafficking Crisis in Edo State, Nigeria

Edo State carries one of the heaviest burdens of irregular migration and outbound trafficking in all of West Africa. SEYP works at the crossroads of crisis, intercepting the cycle before it begins, and providing complete safety nets for survivors.

01

The Vulnerability

Severe economic stagnation, lack of opportunities, and predatory network recruiters exploit young, hopeful school leavers, forcing them towards risky ventures.

Crisis Origin
02

The Perilous Route

Young men and women embark across the Sahara Desert and through Libya, facing severe exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening conditions at the Mediterranean Sea.

Survival Path
03

The Invisible Wounds

Survivors who return carry deep psychological and physical trauma. Standard programs lack the patient, intensive care required for reintegration.

SEYP Intervention Point
OUR MISSION

To Empower & Restore

To empower vulnerable young persons and communities in Nigeria through protection, prevention, skills development, and reintegration support — enabling them to live with dignity, opportunity, and resilience.

OUR VISION

A Future of Independence

A Nigeria where no young person is trafficked, displaced, or left without the tools to build a sustainable livelihood.

Let’s continue empowering communities and transforming lives!

On April 25, 2025, the Society for the Empowerment of Young Persons (SEYP) took a bold step in the fight against human trafficking by hosting a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Benin City, Edo State. Supported by the Resilience Fund and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, the event brought together key players in the fight against trafficking, including representatives from NAPTIP, NACTAL, EDMA, and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Purpose of the Engagement

The meeting, held at M-View Hotel, was designed to rally support and set the stage for empowering female survivors of human trafficking in Edo State. The discussions focused on:

  • Stakeholder Roles: Outlining how stakeholders can identify and nominate female survivors for empowerment programs.
  • Mentorship and Vocational Training: Clarifying the structure of upcoming initiatives aimed at equipping survivors with life-changing skills.
  • Community Sensitization: Strategizing on ways to reduce stigma and promote gender equality in communities affected by trafficking and irregular migration.
  • Targeted Areas for Awareness Campaigns: Highlighting key communities where sensitization efforts will be focused.

Key Highlights of the Meeting

The session, which started at 9:00 AM and ended at 2:05 PM, was packed with insightful discussions and actionable steps.

  • Nomination of Survivors: Stakeholders were tasked with nominating five female survivors of trafficking who have some knowledge or experience in ICT, makeup, catering, or fashion. For easy access to mentors and support, nominees must reside in Benin City.
  • Mentorship and Grant Support: A two-day mentorship program is scheduled for May 5–6, 2025. During this program, survivors will be paired with mentors to guide them. The top 10 participants will each receive a grant of ₦591,500 to help them establish their businesses.
  • Six-Month Sensitization Campaign: The plan includes radio programs, community dialogues, and face-to-face engagements to create awareness and fight stigma.
  • Target Communities: Areas such as Upper Sakponba, Evwotubu, Ikpoba Okha, Upper Siloko, Ekewan, Uhunwonde, and Oriohwon LGAs were identified as high-priority zones for interventions.

Contributions from Stakeholders

Stakeholders brought a wealth of knowledge to the table, sharing key insights and practical suggestions:

  • Trafficking Trends: They identified online recruitment, child labor, and sexual exploitation as some of the most common methods used by traffickers.
  • Community Hotspots: High-risk areas were mapped out to guide sensitization efforts.
  • Awareness Tools: Suggestions included using questionnaires, one-on-one interviews, and establishing feedback systems to measure the impact of the campaigns.

A Shared Vision for a Better Future

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks and a group photograph, a symbolic gesture of unity and shared purpose. This engagement underscored the commitment of all parties to empowering survivors, combating trafficking, and fostering equality in Edo State.

What Lies Ahead

SEYP and its partners are ready to take bold steps to change lives. The mentorship program, grants for business start-ups, and sensitization campaigns will provide survivors with the tools and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives.

This initiative is a reminder that with collective effort, we can create a society where trafficking is eradicated, and survivors have the chance to live with dignity and purpose. Together, we can make a difference.

On November 25, 2024, the Society for Empowerment of Young Persons Transit Shelter celebrated a remarkable milestone by unveiling its newly renovated facilities. This significant transformation, made possible by the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), marks a renewed commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children and individuals in Nigeria.

A Safe Haven for Those in Need

The Transit Shelter has always been a place of refuge, but the recent upgrades have taken its services to a whole new level. Designed to cater to males aged 6-18 and females aged 6 and above, the shelter now offers a safe and welcoming space where vulnerable individuals can find comfort, care, and support. With its capacity expanded to accommodate up to 24 persons, the shelter is better equipped to serve its purpose.

Modern Facilities for Holistic Care

The upgraded shelter has features that enhance the quality of care provided to residents. These include:

  • Counseling and Child-Friendly Room: A peaceful space for emotional healing and support.
  • Fully Equipped Kitchen: Where nutritious meals are prepared daily.
  • Nannie’s Room and Laundry Site: Ensuring proper care and maintaining hygiene standards.
  • Backyard Play Area: Providing a safe space for children to play and socialize.
  • Proposed Sustainability Site and Thriving Farm: Initiatives to promote self-reliance and skill development.

Improved Infrastructure for Comfort and Safety

The renovations didn’t just stop at improving the facilities; the shelter’s infrastructure was also given a much-needed boost. Key enhancements include:

  • Air conditioners and solar-powered rechargeable fans for improved comfort.
  • Wheelchairs and clutches for those with mobility challenges.
  • First aid equipment and fire extinguishers to ensure safety.
  • Dignity kits to meet residents’ basic needs.
  • A borehole and two large water storage tanks, provide a steady supply of clean water.

A Vision Rooted in Sustainability

Situated on a 50x100ft plot of land, the shelter has introduced a thriving farm and is working towards a sustainability site. These projects are designed to teach residents valuable skills, foster independence, and promote long-term self-reliance.

Collaboration for Impact

The success of this renovation was a direct result of the partnership between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the management of the Society for Empowerment of Young Persons Transit Shelter. Their shared vision and dedication have created a space that not only meets immediate needs but also empowers individuals to rebuild their lives.

What’s Next?

The renovated shelter is a significant achievement, but maintaining this success will require ongoing effort. Key priorities for the future include:

  1. Regular Maintenance: To keep the facilities in top shape.
  2. Continuous Support: Ensuring residents have access to essential services and resources.
  3. Sustainability Initiatives: Expanding programs that equip residents with skills for the future.

A Brighter Future for All

The renovation of the Society for Empowerment of Young Persons Transit Shelter is more than just a facelift; it is a renewed promise to provide hope, care, and opportunities for vulnerable children and individuals in Nigeria. With the shelter now better equipped to serve its purpose, it stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and a shared commitment to making a difference.

As we celebrate this transformation, we look forward to the positive impact the shelter will continue to have on countless lives across the country. Together, we are building a future where everyone has a chance to thrive.
